Jan 1, 2020 at 18:16 comment added Joe Jarrett The cemetery kindly sent me some pictures off the grave. And the name corresponds to his.SALVADOR M CAMPOS and not as the record says in ancestry as Salvatore Campos. findagrave.com/memorial/122187956/salvatore-campos Ive requested the death certificate though I put myself down as Grandson though he was my Uncle.. All round is great news. Wishing you a very Happy New Year
Dec 21, 2019 at 19:15 comment added Jan Murphy @JoeJarrett I've added a section to the bottom of my answer with a link to NYC's Department of Health, along with some research guides for other records you could look for if you can't get a certificate.

Dec 21, 2019 at 6:54 comment added Joe Jarrett Im back to my original problem though this time I have a death date. I tried to order a death certificate via vitalchek.com but you have to live in the US! Any other way ? Seems ridiculous in this day and age to not be able to obtain a digital copy!
Dec 21, 2019 at 6:34 comment added Joe Jarrett Just a quick update. I got a response from Rosehill Cemetry. This gentleman lived on West 45th Street in Manhattan, New York.. very close to where my Uncle was living in 1954. He died at Bellevue Hospital and Echevarrria Funeral Home handled his arrangements. So next step is to apply for that death record in NY and not NJ!
Dec 19, 2019 at 11:23 comment added Joe Jarrett Hi Jan, Thank you very much again. I have requested a photo via FindaGrave a couple of weeks back. Still hoping to get one! Following your advice I've just sent an email to the cemetery. I checked your link and yes it looks like the same person and even "better" the death was registered in New York which I suspect he was there since 1911. That would explain as well why I couldn't find the death on the NJ index. Next step is to apply for a death certificate.
Dec 14, 2019 at 20:42 comment added Jan Murphy ancestry.com/sharing/… might be the same person in the Find a Grave memorial. ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/118041428/person/…
Dec 14, 2019 at 20:31 comment added Jan Murphy Here's an interesting thing, though -- the Find a Grave memorial has a plot number. You could try writing the cemetery and asking if they can make copies of any records for you (ask to cover expenses or offer a donation). If you can find out who owns the plot or paid for the burial or put up a stone, that would be important information. It might be easier and cheaper to register at Find a Grave first and ask the memorial creator what information they have, but they have set up their profile not to take messages.
Dec 14, 2019 at 20:27 comment added Jan Murphy Be careful about Find a Grave. People can put up memorials on Find a Grave without knowing for sure they are buried there or whether there is actually a marker, and there can be a stone in cemeteries but no burial. If you are registered at Find a Grave, you could try making a photo request to see if a volunteer can find a marker. There's no guarantee the information on a gravestone is accurate, but if there is a stone, there might be clues that would tell you if this is your relative or someone else.
Dec 14, 2019 at 20:15 comment added Jan Murphy If he was buried in a place different than where he died, there may be two death records, one in the place he died and one in the place he was buried. See The Legal Genealogist Death in the Wrong Place and Following Up on Death.
Dec 14, 2019 at 18:30 comment added Joe Jarrett So Im still on the search for my Uncle and I found this: Salvatore Campos / Rosedale and Rosehill Cemetery, NJ While the name might not be exact, the age matches. My uncle would have been 73 that year in 1959. (18/11/1959) findagrave.com/memorial/122187956/salvatore-campos However I could not find this person in the NJ Death Index newjerseydeathindex.com So I'm trying to get hold of the death certificate which is no easy task as I live in Switzerland. My question is this: Could there be circumstances where hes buried in NJ but the death registered somewhere else?
