If I'm looking at someone else's Ancestry public family tree, how do I calculate the relationship between two people in their tree? Even just to be able to calculate the relationship to the home person in their tree would be good.

Ancestry support topics only suggest how to calculate the relationship in your own tree but not third-parties.

There's no automatic way to make that connection via the tools on Ancestry. Probably the best you can do within Ancestry is to examine the pedigrees for each person in that tree ("Tree Search", "home person" or name, Tools - "view in tree", then click the pedigree icon), and check each pedigree for common ancestors.

Use Geni: Use the "SmartCopy" browser extension to copy to Geni world family tree whatever relevant data is on Ancestry and not in Geni. Once done, ask Geni to calculate the relationship.

This surely assumes you are happy enough with the sourcing and general accuracy of the information to expose it on a world family tree.

Yes. But if you're not happy, you can set the profile in doubt to "private" and/or delete them after you're done. Commented May 4 at 0:01

One method I found requires you to be invited as a guest by the tree owner.

Using the Ancestry app:

  1. Go to settings and switch tree.
  2. Once the tree has loaded, go to settings and select the tree to view tree settings.
  3. In the Who are you field, search for a person (e.g. the tree owner), and check Use as home person.

On the web:

  1. Choose More (⋮) left of screen and choose Tree settings.
  2. The home person is indicated on the right. Choose change.
