A census is the regular acquisition by national or local governments of information about individuals and populations. Census records are valuable sources of information for family historians and genealogists, as the data collected may give indications about birth-dates and -places and relationships within families as well as recording (e.g.) the residence and occupation of individuals.
This tag should be used in association with others that identify the government conducting the census (such as united-states or united-kingdom) and the time span in which it occurred (where relevant).
