The region has been inhabited by humans from the earliest archaeological records. The Silures fortified the area in Roman times. It was a point of on-going conflict between the Welsh and Norman invaders from England. Glamorgan did not fall under English domination until the sixteenth century.
The availability of coal and the capacity to smelt metals made Glamorgan a key region during the industrial revolution. Mining industries (particularly collieries) in many parts of the English-speaking world owe much of their history to migrants from Glamorgan.
