For questions about records of poverty and the Poor Laws of the UK, including workhouse documents.

For an introduction to this topic, see the National Archives guide on Poverty and the Poor Laws in England and Wales in the nineteenth century. The location and content of Poor Law records changed dramatically with the reforms of 1834 which resulted in the formation of Poor Law Unions and expansion of workhouses. Poor Law records are archived both at the National Archives and county record offices.
