Is there a standard reference for alternative forms of a given or personal name?
ColeValleyGirl (hoping that is the name of the person who posted this "naming" question). Many genealogy programs, including your Ancestry Member Tree, allow for a single person to have multiple names. Like your James, Jim, Jas. As the researcher, you need to look closely at the other information in your source document, to see and know that they are the same person. -- Hope that helps. Russ

How should I distinguish siblings named identically?
The two John's should be stand alone records within the family. John b: 1845 is record one, John b: 1855 is record two. I should not have to enter data into any other field. The birth DATE is what tells the difference. Of course, the Death Date for the first record would be BEFORE the birth date of the second John.
